Writing I dont have time for

Writing I don’t have time  for I just took what was hopefully my last midterm of my undergraduate career. But it doesn’t feel like anything worth celebrating about. I spent the past 4 days studying as much as I could, yet by the time I tallied up the points of the things I even wrote anything down for, they just (maybe)barely totaled 56/120. This is 6.046, Design and Analysis of Algorithms, whose prereqs are 6.042 and 6.006, both classes I have pretty strong negative memories of. But its a requirement for the new 6â€"14 major, Computer Science, Economics, and Data Science, along with all three of my other classes this term. 6.036 (Machine Learning), 15.053 (Business Optimization), and 15.276 (Communicating with Data). I have come a long way since taking 6.042 and 6.006 my freshman spring and sophomore fall respectively. And that was really reflected this weekend in the difference between my study habits then and now: I didn’t study on my bed or got swallowed by my sofa, I actually left my room (from off campus) to study on campus at a desk I didn’t skim through solutions, hoping I’d get something eventually through osmosis. I actually tried practice problems and checked them and learned from my mistakes. I didn’t try to listen to music, which regrettably distracts me from being able to process what I’m reading, and instead put in earplugs to focus. I didn’t just read recitation and lecture notes. This time I marked them all up with short summaries of each section I was reading for later review and cheat sheet copying. I didn’t procrastacook. I made all my food on sunday and have just been eating scrambled egg and chives and rice for lunch and dinners. I didn’t try to study 2 hours before the exam on 2 hours of sleep. I actually kept 8 hours consistently throughout because that’s at least what I need to function and study. But despite all this, I won’t ever see the counterfactual reality of how I would’ve done, had I not improved my study habits as much as I have. I just see how I barely even wrote legible answers and am hoping for even just 30 points out of this thing worth 20% of my grade. I’ve stepped back from literally everything that makes me feel alive and like a human being part of society to try and pass this last semesters courseload. And still, none of that sacrifice or effort feels reflected in this. And right after I finished at 9:30 tonight, I was hit by just how much OTHER work I’ve punted that is now knocking down my door, making me feel terrible about how much I have to face with no energy or stamina left. This isn’t particularly new, the sort of post-exam hosedness, but its just even more difficult when its a class you’re putting every second and moment of mental bandwidth and focus and emotional energy and it just spits at you and laughs ha, you thought you could even try. I’m somewhere between emotionally numb, about to cry but can’t, and in intense stress and fear about if I’m going to graduate and how I (can’t) afford another semester to finish. I know I need to reach out to my s ³ dean and the professors of 046 and 036, which btw I am also 2 weeks of homework late and behind on. All of them have been nothing but supportive and accommodating throughout the various other circumstances I’ve had to face this semester, but I don’t even know what to ask. I know I need to give them a heads up, tell them I am trying and doing things differently and really putting in effort, just in case I end up being a borderline case of C-. But I also just get this massive thing stuck in my chest whenever I think about it. I’m so disappointed in myself â€" even though I know that for me, I’ve come a long way and overcome so much this semester to even get here. Everything I’ve been thinking about the past few weeks, self-worth, relative measures, support networks, just seems to have gone out the window in favor of this habit of self-loathing again. I didn’t even realize that how well I did or didnt do was being tied to my self-worth until it wasnt there anymore. If you observed me coming home to my apartment and how I’ve interacted with my flatmates, you’d think I was passive-aggressive upset at them. They asked how I was, howd it go, congrats, you survived! but Ive all but muttered fuck and ignored them.   I love my flatmates so much, and I know they feel the same, but even then I guess I didnt want them to see that Im actually hurting so much.   Also, I know that they know already anyway and are just worried about me.   But if I stopped to say, no it didnt go well and Im really sad and disappointed and frustrated, Id have to admit that Im sad and disappointed and frustrated. (so instead Im going to admit it to thousands of anonymous readers on the admissions blogs HAHAHAHAHAA) But 100% of why I’m writing this right now when I’m supposed to be catching up on sleep, is because I need to process and I’ve always written to process when my emotions were overwhelming me. It has humbled me so much, this semester. I don’t know what’s going on in the world. I see friends who are struggling and I can’t do anything about it. I am drowning and doing my absolute best to keep afloat, but I don’t even have the salty tears to show for it. I’m sure I was hosed in past semesters, but not like this. Not being able to do things I care about, with people, really drains me. I wouldn’t be able to do four more years of this without losing parts of me that are absolutely core to who I am. It terrifies me to even feel this close to that. Even more to know that this what so many people go through, for much, much, longer. If I didn’t have the community that I do have, flatmates that still try to reach out to me even though their post-graduate lives probably have even more at stake by trying to make ends meet, all the habits I currently do have, and friendships from past endeavors that remind me of things important to both of us, it would be so easy for me to lose myself in the jadedness and void of constant disappointment and hopelessness and sadness and fear. At the moment, I don’t care any more about civic engagement, mental health, community, or the world any more than the next person. And these things are what people know me for and are things that I’ve shown myself I DO care about. Yet even still, it’s only because of the community of people that remind me of who I am at my best, and ~30 days left of IHTFP, am I able to hold faith in myself. *Breathe.* I still feel really empty. I’m really scared about tomorrow and being useless to my 15.053 Optimization project group. In two days I have 6.036 lab and I still need to read the lecture for that and also a persuasive presentation for 15.276 on voting in 2018 midterms. But I just finished four days of nonstop studying, did my all of the above so that I could to say to myself: “I did my best, I did everything I could, and that’s all I can do.” And that if I hadn’t, I’d be that much farther from graduating. The dramatic significance of act 1 scene 5 is, it is where Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time. Romeo realises Rosaline is going to be there so he sneaks himself into the Capulets ball. But as soon as Romeo first sets his eyes on Juliet, he immediately falls in love with her. I have realised that Tybalt, this early on in the play, is a sly and nasty character. When Romeo and Juliet first speak to each other, they say it in a sonnet. Already, they kiss, the holy palmers kiss. This makes this scene so dramatically important to the rest of the play, its the first meeting of the lovers. Tybalt and Capulet own a part of this scene, but Romeo and Juliet are the main characters. Capulet, being the man of the house, is in control of whatever goes on. This relates to the times in which this play was written. I was quite surprised that Capulet never sent Romeo away, but I think peace was all he wanted. The theme of peace and conflict is here, because if Tybalt had his way, he would have sent Romeo away. From the start of the play, Romeo is in love with a girl called Rosaline and stresses that she is the only girl for him. When he talks to Benvolio, and says he is going to intrude in the Capulets ball just to see Rosaline, Benvolio says that he might see some other girl, but Romeo is sure that Rosaline is the only one he will ever love. Imagining being part of the audience, I can see that Romeo is really in love with Rosaline, he must be to sneak into the Capulets party. Also Juliet is only thirteen and has never even considered love or marriage before Romeo comes along. The theme of light and dark comes into context from act 2. Year 4 children are young enough to appreciate the possibilities yet old enough to engage with all the activities a puppet theatre has to offer. The children can conduct their own research into such themes, produce work and conduct theatrical activities to exercise and reinforce their knowledge. Design and Technology skills are developed using the resource as inspiration and as a method of presenting children’s work. It can be argued that the artistic side of this subject â€Å"promotes divergence†, (MOYLES, Janet, 2007, p.102) and that in ensuring involvement for each individual child, it encourages children to develop their ideas. Children can work as individuals, partners or in groups to create their own scenery and characters for the stage and bring it to life. Such activities satisfy the NCW by enabling children to investigate materials and their uses, solve problems such as getting their creation to stand vertically and unaided, and to produce something of their creative choice that adheres to specifications. The first task in constructing the resource was to settle on a design. In an effort to make the resource reusable, the theatre itself was designed to serve as a construct around which the children would be able to create and act out different characters, scenery and stories. As a result of this, it was decided that it should be made of wood, as this would be more robust than cardboard. Sharp points, rough edges and other safety issues were resolved. Furthermore, it can be dismantled (see Appendix 2a – 2g) for easy storage and transport. It also had to be large enough that a group of children would be able to use it, and that all members of a class should be able to view the presentation collectively. Features such as the blocks that support the scenery (see Appendix 3a – 3e) and the Velcro attachments (see Appendix 4a – 4d) were added to create elements that are interchangeable and renewable, such as different backdrops and scenery. These in turn give more freedom to the children when either creating or performing using the materials likely to be available within a school environment. The main focuses of teaching with this resource are to encourage the children to practise and develop their skills in co-operative communication, expression, presentation, speaking and listening, and writ ing for a specific purpose. Furthermore, the focus is to cause the children to have a greater involvement and influence on their own and each other’s learning which, in turn, will be beneficial and instrumental to their confidence building and independence. The children’s increased participation turns them into what Henry Pluckrose (1991) deems â€Å"active learners rather than passive onlookers†. Paradoxically, he also states that we should bear in mind that as an activity, re-enactments have no real or specific purpose and have â€Å"little to commend† them and â€Å"are likely to be counter-productive†. In contrast, Rosie Turner-Bisset (2005) argues that â€Å"in teaching through drama, teachers will be drawing on some of these processes and harnessing children’s natural way of learning†. The latter seems more cognisant of children’s various styles of learning and it is the mindfulness of today’s necessity to teach in aural, kinaesthetic and visual styles that arguably reconciles the two points being considered. Bringing a puppet theatre into the classroom allows the children to explore many aspects of education whilst seemingly doing what comes natural to them: playing. It provides an interest to children of a wide age range because it provides a theme, style, and setting with which to play. Different abilities of children are catered for because their creativity needs no fixed standard. In both creating the characters and in role-playing with them, the children of a higher ability can reach higher standards and levels of complexity whilst children of a lower ability, whether that be in reading and writing, or communication, can simplify all activities to their level of appropriate challenges. In accordance, Allan Redfern (1996) writes, role-play promotes â€Å"a co-operative approach to learning and can draw on a wide range of talents and interests within the class†. Children of both ge nders will enjoy discovering what they can do with a puppet theatre in terms of their own creativity as the scenery and characters can be made by the children to fit into any scenario of their imagination. The theatre can promote a range of learning styles. When used by the teacher and fellow members of the class, the theatre supplies a good foundation for visual learning. For example, a history lesson can be introduced to the children by being brought to life by the story it unfolds (for example, see Appendix 5a – 5b). It enables children to get a visual representation of the time period and will assist children to remember the basic facts. When children are the puppeteers and designers of the scenery and characters, their kinaesthetic learning is stimulated. Geoff Petty (2009) states that, â€Å"drama raises self-esteem and self-confidence, often allowing hitherto unremarkable members of your class to shine†. By being involved in the process, and acquiring freedom fo r their creativity, many children who would normally be shy or uninterested in the subject have the opportunity to become engaged and find their voice through other means that they may enjoy. Likewise the Wigan Leisure ; Cultural Trust, (2007, p.3) concur by arguing that the using of puppets â€Å"give children a voice†. As a puppet theatre, this resource has benefits over many other choices because of its flexibility. Other resources considered were a large globe, some inspiration cards and a resource pack including activities such as trails. However, these alternatives would not provide the equivalent involvement or interaction for the pupils. Considering. â€Å"From birth, children instinctively use pretend play as a means of making sense of the world. They observe and respond to their environment. They imitate words and actions. They create situations to play and assume roles. They interact with peers and arrange space and objects to bring their stories to life. They dir ect one another to bring order to dramatic play. And they respond to one another’s dramas. In other words, children arrive at school with rudimentary skills as playwrights, actors, designers, directors, and audience members.† (NATIONAL PTA, 2006) The puppet theatre not only permits them to interact with the resource in the exampled scenario presented here (see Appendix 6a – 6b), but to create their own versions and use the theatre frame as the template in which to support them. The other skills that would develop in using this resource are also far more varied and perhaps effective in later life than other resources, because this resource when utilised to its full potential can boost confidence, exercise presentation skills and extend children’s aptitude to communicate with each other, adults and to a specific audience. The purpose of the resource is to promote children’s learning through more than one style and to give confidence to the children wh en interacting with resources independently of adults. By teaching their peers and themselves, children can become skilled at finding their own methods of learning and practising them. The puppet theatre gives children new styles of learning in the three inter-related subjects specified, the opportunity to become more engaged in their own education and to perfect skills that may otherwise be left immature. As specified by Jane Maloney et al (2006), puppets provide â€Å"an extra stimulus for the children to become engaged with the topic they are studying and this can apply to all areas of the curriculum†. This resource uses push-in or marotte puppets allowing the attention to be on experiencing the complete theatre. Children of all abilities have the opportunity to hone their fine motor skills in the creation and movement as they would with more anthropomorphic or animated styles such as the glove or marionette puppet. However, the flexibility offered by the resource as a who le is of greater value to the selected subjects. Children can progress by exploiting this resource, advancing further by increasing their complexity level in understanding and creative work. When the children become either too advanced or require greater intellectual stimulation than can be achieved through immersing themselves in the characters and the scenery, the theatre could still provide inspiration for the children to create their own performances. This presents opportunities for them to bring themselves to the foreground and further develop their skills for teamwork, creative writing, drama, and other theatrical skills such as direction and even technological skills such as lighting, filming and other work behind the scenes, which can prove just as crucial to the success of role-playing to an audience. Current ratio is also called the working capital ratio (Missouribusiness.net, n.d.). It is the number of times a companys current assets exceed its current liabilities, which is an indication of the solvency of that business (Auerbach, n.d.). The formula to compute the current ratio which is total Current Assets divide total Current Liabilities. A general rule of thumb for current ratio should be at least 2:1 (Missouribusiness.net, n.d.). A lower current ratio determines that the company may not be ability to pay its invoices on time, while a higher ratio means that company has money in cash or safe investment that could be put to better use in business (Barry, n.d.). The quick ratio is also called the acid test ratio (Missouribusiness.net, n.d.). It indicates the extent to which company could pay current liabilities without relying on the sale of inventory (Missouribusiness.net, n.d.). A general rule of thumb states that the ratio should be 1 to 1 or 1:1 (Missouribusiness.net, n.d.). If it is higher, the company may be keeping too much cash on hand or have a poor collection program for accounts receivable (Barry, n.d.). If it is lower, it may indicate that the company relies too heavily on inventory to meet its obligations. Although their ratio is decrease but they still can pay the debts because of they repaid their debt more early and use that was earning little interest to buy back higher interest-bearing corporate bonds (Tesco, 2010). The Main competitors of the Tesco are Carrefour S.A., J Sainsbury plc, Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC and so on (Datamonitor, 2004). These are the main competitors in business strategies and the value markets. In Hopi culture and religious tradition food and sex play large and important roles, although in different situations the roles may be completely opposite. In Sun Chief particularly the chapter called â€Å"the Making of a Man† we can see that food is very important spiritually to the Hopi people. In the Wowochim ceremony each boy is given their manhood name over a â€Å"mother-corn ear† (159). In each of a dozen or more ceremonies we see that certain practices such as the sprinkling of corn (159, 160, 162, etc.), or the eating of unsalted foods as a form of fasting (158, 161, 165, etc.), is a major theme. This notion of giving foods back to the Gods, likely stems from the location of the Hopi nation in the desert region of the American southwest. Because food is scarce here, the Hopi people look upon it as the chief gift of the Gods, and therefore the offering of food back to the Gods makes sense. It also makes sense that in certain times of exceptional spiritual devotion, the giving up of food would be necessary to show an intense piety and strength. The story revolves around a family where the parents have spent all the earnings plus provident fund on their children.. their study and for their settlement. But once the children(boys) are own their own and with their families they forget that they have some responsibility towards their parents too, because the parents do not have a pension to fall back upon. The children are quit upset over the thought that they have to now look after their parents and keep them along with them. They feel them as a burden and plan to SHARE them. This comes as a shock to the parents who agree with the decision taken by the children in a very supportive way,†¦. though in heart of hearts they are very disturbed. Now here we come to the conclusion friends are better than relations because at this junction of their lives friends givemoral supportin this crucial period when the parents are separated .. one living with one son and the mother living with the other son. Their small requirements are not met with and the mother is seen as a spoilsport and nagger. The father finds good company in a restaurant owner couple who pay him for the work of accounts he unknowingly does for them. Then help comesfrom their surrogate son whom the couple had sent abroad for higher studies. He gives them their due in the form of gifting them the house they lived in all their life and by also gifting them the love and respect that they deserve as parents. This opens the eyes of their own sons and they show repentance.

Book Review “Marley Me” Essays - 1058 Words

I have never considered that a book about a dog could be so appealing and full of deep thoughts. But I changed my viewpoint after reading the autobiographical novel â€Å"Marley Me† written by John Grogan which depicts an astonishing story about the neurotic and loyal, clumsy and loving dog named Marley. In fact, as the author mentioned in some interviews, he intended to write the â€Å"dog story†, but soon after he realized that it was impossible to do so without including the family life [2]. That is why the title â€Å"Marley Me† encapsulates the main topic of the book such as the relationship between a human and a pet. To start with let me introduce main characters: John, Jenny, and Marley. For instance, he shared Jenny’s grief when she lost her first baby during the pregnancy. During the next pregnancy, when Jenny had to remain in the bed for the whole month because of the early-arrival risk of the new baby, Marley again had been her companion making her boring days brighter. Finally, each time Marley easily accepted the Jenny and John’s new babies when they arrived from the hospital. As they grew, Marley became their best friend. It seemed like the dog understood that they were little humans whom he had to protect. Lately, Marley showed unexpected guarding characteristics when John rushed to help some girl who was stabbed near his house. Somehow the dog itself understood the danger of the situation and transformed into a â€Å"completely different dog†. Because of crimes around the neighborhood, John worried for the safety of his growing son Patrick and his pregnant wife. They started to appreciate the big dog being in the house. Even though Marley was harmless, his presence made them feel secure. Nevertheless, John admitted that teaching the â€Å"master-beast† basics to the dog was necessary in their relationship. Reading the book, I understood how it’s hard to have patience when a dog doesn’t obey the master’s commands.
